China's Stocks Have Biggest Tumble in 10 Years
China's stocks tumbled the most in 10 years as some investors judged record gains in key indexes as excessive. Citic Securities Co., the nation's biggest publicly traded brokerage, led declines.
"The market's very sensitive as it's been trading at record levels and some stocks are considered overvalued,'' said Fan Dizhao, who helps manage about $1.8 billion with Guotai Asset Management Co. in Shanghai. "Investors are nervous about recent rapid gains and are not convinced further share-price increases can be sustained."
The Shanghai and Shenzhen 300 Index, which tracks yuan- denominated A shares listed on China's two exchanges, plunged 250.18 points, or 9.2 percent, to 2457.49 at the close. The measure, which jumped 13 percent in the past six sessions, closed at a record 2707.68 yesterday.

China Still Remembers Nixon 35 Years Later
Thirty-five years after Richard Nixon became the first U.S. president to journey to China and helped begin to thaw the cold war, the details of his landmark visit remain vivid in the minds of Chinese people.
Ji Chaozhu, former deputy UN secretary-general, served as an interpreter during Nixon's tour. He clearly remembered the day of February 21, 1972. After Nixon deplaned at the Beijing airport he shook hands with former premier Zhou Enlai, who told the president, "your hand has stretched across the largest ocean of the world".
Nowadays, multipolarization and globalization enables China and the U.S. to have closer cooperation both in world affairs and trade. The U.S. became China's second largest trading partner. The trade volume between the two countries hit 262.6 billion U.S. dollars in 2006.
Chinglish: Creativity for English Language
The Global Language Monitor (GLM) recently released a report saying Chinglish has become creative for new English words.
English, as a global language, has been affected by the rise of China. There are reports saying that many new English words are "Chinglish" such as "Long time no see" and "Drink tea."
The president of the GLM, Paul Payack, said Chinglish and other mixed English words have enriched the English vocabulary, which has now 986,120 words according to latest estimates. The GLM added 20,000 new words to their base in the English language last year, twice as many as the previous year. Twenty percent of them are Chinglish.
Chinglish's influence is close related with the Chinese-language study promotion around the world. It is said there are about 30 million foreigners learning Chinese. As a symbol for Chinese teaching, Confucius Institutes play an important role in Chinese cultural communication. There are now 120 Confucius institutes in the world spread across more than 50 countries. The number is expected to increase to 500 in 2010.

Now - according to a Xinhua News Agency report, Saturday - the Association for the Great Wall and the management of the Great Wall at Badaling have initiated a joint campaign to curb the graffiti habit and also invite proposals as to how the wall can best be patched and repaired so as to better protect this World Heritage site.

US Urged to Open up to Chinese Tourists
"Asking the United States to open its tourist market will be a topic for the China-US Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade this year," said Zhang Xiqin, deputy director of the China National Tourism Administration at a press conference.
So far, 132 countries and regions have become tourist destinations for Chinese travellers. However, neither the United States nor Canada is on the list, as both prohibit entry to travel agency groups.
A Beijing-based travel agency manager told China Daily that the US is clearly a country that doesn't think "the more tourists the better".
Quoting statistics from the 1990s, which stated that the US received between 30 million and 50 million tourists a year, the agent said: "The country does not welcome too many tourists." He also called it "an arrogant country".
"In 2007, the figure is likely to hit 40 million," said Zhang.

Huayan Temple's chief monk Daojian said that soccer can help the monks get strong mentally and physically. "We need exercises to keep us strong and fit. The exercises can be either traditional or modern, like Kungfu or soccer. Soccer can enlarge our social scope and can also promote Buddhism."
Bruce Bremeise who comes from the United States, a photographer of the international team, said: "It is very nice to play soccer games with Buddhist monks, who are very polite. Buddhism is a peaceful religion."
