2008 Olympic update
One World, One Dream - and many venues

  A total of 31 venues will be used in Beijing for the 2008 Olympics. But the adventurous sports fan can get away from the capital and have a truly memorable experience. Here's an introduction to the six sports sites away from the capital.

Qingdao
   Qingdao is located on the southern coastline of the Shandong Peninsula, in east China's Shandong Province. Dubbed "Eastern Switzerland," Qingdao is one of China's most important port cities. Its population exceeds 7 million
people.
  Qingdao is an important manufacturing center, has an ice-free port and is one of the most important textile industrial centers in China.
  Qingdao International Sailing Center
  The center is located on the site of the old Beihai shipyard on Qingda''s Fushan Bay in China's Shangdong Province. The center will cover an area of 111 acres, two-thirds of which will be utilized for the competition.


Hong Kong
  Situated at China's southeastern coastline, Hong Kong has a population of 6.9 million people, which consists of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon Peninsula, the New Territories and 262 outlying islands.
  Equestrian events
  Equestrian events will be held at the Hong Kong Sports Institute and Penfold Park in Shatin, Beas River Country Club and part of the adjacent Hong Kong Golf Club.

Tianjin
   Known as "Diamond of the Bohai Gulf," Tianjin is the gateway to Beijing. With a population of more than 10 million
people, it is one of the country's biggest industrial centers and one of its key ports.
  Tianjin Olympic Center Stadium
  Serving as one of the soccer venues, the stadium covers 839,000 square feet, with a seating capacity of 60,000. It was designed by the Japanese firm AXS SAWTO Inc.
  The six-floor stadium includes an indoor parking lot, a marketplace, an exhibition hall, a dining room, a conference room, a health care center and a gym.  The Olympic Center Stadium is able to accommodate up to 80,000 people.


Shanghai
  Shanghai is situated in the middle of the east coastline and on the southern wing of the Yangtze River delta. It is China's  major  industrial  and commercial center, with a
population of over 13.5 million people, ranking first in China in terms of population and population density. It is an important hub for land, marine and air transportation.
  Shanghai Stadium
  Shanghai Stadium will serve as a soccer venue. Built in 1997, the stadium covers over 2 million square feet and has a seating capacity of 80,000.


Shenyang
  The capital city of Liaoning Province, Shenyang is the economic, cultural, financial and commercial center of northeast China, with a population of 6.93 million.
  Shenyang Wulihe Sports Stadium
  Shenyang Wulihe Sports Stadium Stadium will serve as a soccer venue. The stadium is currently undergoing renovations. The turf will be replaced, a new scoreboard will be installed and the stadium will be rewired. Completion is set for midyear. The new seating capacity will be 60,000.


Qinhuangdao
  Located in Hebei province in northern China, Qinhuangdao is a coastal city known for its ice-free port, the Great Wall at Shanhaiguan Pass and a summer resort in Beidaihe. It has a population of 2.7 million people.
  Qinhuangdao Olympic Sports Center
  The Qinhuangdao Olympic Sports Center Stadium will serve as a soccer venue.
  Construction was started in May 2002 and completed in July 2004. Covering over 1.8 million square feet, the stadium has a seating capacity of 33,572.
